Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) by joining Irving Arts Center to experience art created by Hispanic artists and/or inspired by Hispanic culture and traditions.
Two notable exhibitions, both on display currently and free to view are Works by Benjamin Muñoz (Carpenter Gallery through Oct 28) and Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy (Dupree Lobby Gallery through Nov 4).
Works by Benjamin Muñoz: Ben Muñoz is a Dallas-based multi-disciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, installation, and monumental printmaking. He grew up in the vibrant Chicano culture of Corpus Christi where he found his voice by reflecting on his heritage and upbringing. His work can be found in the public collections of The Mexic-Arte Museum, The National Museum of Mexican Art, The Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art, The Blanton Museum of Art and extensive private collections, including the largest collection of Latino art in the world belonging to Gilberto Cardenas. Muñoz has been honored with 17 solo exhibitions throughout the United States and was included in Soy de Tejas, a traveling survey of Texas-born Latino artists. Related Event: Lunch and Learn with Ben Munoz October 3 from 12 to 1:30PM.
Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy is an exhibition created by the Wittliff Collections at the Alkek Library, Texas State University, presented in partnership with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate for the National Endowment for the Humanities. It features photographs taken by Bill Wittliff traditional in the 1970s on a ranch in northern Mexico. Featuring bilingual narrative text, the photographs reveal the muscle, sweat, and drama behind a way of life that now exists only in memory and in the photographs included in this exhibition.
