The performance celebrates the acquisition of Irving Arts Center’s brand new Steinway Model D Concert Grand Piano.  The majestic instrument is widely regarded as the pinnacle of concert grand pianos, and is the overwhelming choice of the world’s greatest pianists.  With three symphony orchestras among Irving Arts Center’s ten resident performing arts organizations, there will be no shortage of opportunities to hear the showpiece instrument in the future, but to make its official debut, “The Music of Billy Joel and Elton John Starring Michael Cavanaugh” is the perfect choice.

Widely regarded as the two greatest rock and roll pianists of all time, Billy Joel and Elton John are among the top ten best-selling male artists of all time, with Billy Joel checking in at number seven (over 160 million records sold) and Elton John appearing at number three (over 300 million records sold).  The Piano Man, Billy Joel, has won six Grammy Awards and charted an astonishing 42 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart over his six-decade career. Sir Elton has won five Grammy Awards, and charted an almost incomprehensible 71 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart over his illustrious career.  He is the first artist to achieve Top 10 singles across six consecutive decades.

ABOUT MICHAEL CAVANAUGH
Performing many of the timeless hits made famous by both artists, Michael Cavanaugh has been described as “Brilliant,” by Variety Magazine and “Amazing,” by The New York Times. Hailed as “Entertainer of the Year,” by Reuters, and the “New Voice of the American Rock ‘n Roll Songbook” by Billboard Magazine, Michael scored his big break when Billy Joel handpicked the charismatic performer and musician for the lead role in Broadway’s smash hit “Movin’ Out” which made its debut in 2002. Michael garnered rave reviews and accolades for his performance and portrayal of Joel, culminating with Grammy and Tony Award nominations.

Following his Broadway success, Michael began touring the world in his own right in 2005, creating a show that reinterprets the modern pop/rock songbook.
